Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) - Review

Valkyria Chronicles sees you take control of a small military force, fighting a series of increasingly difficult skirmishes against a bunch of evil dudes from the east. It's a turn-based game, meaning that instead of struggling to keep track of what's happening at six different locations on the battlefield all at once, you only have to worry about one thing at a time. Personally, that's how I like my strategy games: thoughtful rather than frantic.

There's lots wrong with it though. The computer's attempts to defeat you are very blatently half-hearted. If the game gave you a penny every time the AI decided to end its turn early instead of making the most of a chance to kill one of your team members, you'd have enough money at the end of the campaign to buy yourself a coffee and croissant at some fancy café. The tedious long-winded exchanges of dialogue before every mission are also a nuisance, especially as they stay unskippable even when you're on a second (or fifth, sixth, grr, seventh) attempt. Maybe most disappointingly, it lacks any kind of multiplayer option.

But boo to all that. It's so beautiful, sumptuous and fun you gotta let if off.
