Alien Assault (PC) - Review

It’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong in Space Hulk Alien Assault. Most often it’s one of your Terminator’s space marine’s weapons jamming right at the start of the Genestealers’ aliens’ turn. Sure, you had two heavily armoured dudes covering the other entrance, but they might as well be wearing dresses made from candy floss for all the resistance they’ll put up when attacked from behind.

Can you negate the fearsome difficulty by returning to a mid-mission save point after everything goes belly-up? No. While the game does keep track of your progress, it never asks you to save or load. If that marine who miraculously survived a couple of early missions and got a couple of promotions dies, then he is gone. And if his death is followed by the rest of your squad – which is what usually happens – then you’ll be trying the entire mission again from scratch with a bunch of rookies.

The result is a tense, tough, and immensely satisfying game. Sure, it ain’t pretty, the story is written in pretty dodgy English, and it is a total rip off of a certain Games Workshop game. But do have a go if you think you’re hard enough.
