The Sounds of the SNES

It's been said that contraints often liberate rather than limit creativity. Give a musician a state of the art recording studio and he'll come back to you with an over-produced and boring piece of music. Give him the SNES's sound chip and he'll write some of the greatest melodies of all time.

Koji Kondo - A slightly sinister looking genius

Hit the break for a walk down memory lane, and maybe feel a little despair that videogame music today isn't quite what it used to be.

Super Mario World

Creepy, exciting, dangerous: YES.

Contra 3: The Alien Wars (Super Probotector in the UK)

The incredible soundtrack to an incredible third level.

Secret of Mana

I cannot listen to this without instantly wanting to start a new game.

Street Fighter II

Poor old Ken. Never as popular as Ryu, but at least he got the better music.

Super Mario Kart

The first tune for your first race, and one you'll remember forever.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

This is what entering a dungeon is supposed to sound like.

And of course, this is what triumphant adventuring should sound like.
